- Forest conservation
Tour A: Visit to Golden Hope Plantations at Carey Island and Golden Jomalina Foods Industries
Delegates will visit an oil palm plantation, palm oil mill and a palm oil refinery belonging to Synergy Drive Berhad, approximately 1½ hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. This visit will show delegates various aspects of sustainable production of palm oil; some highlights include zero burning practices, nursery establishment, legume cover crops, water management, integrated pest management, utilisation of by-products, harvesting of fresh fruit bunches and processing them into crude palm oil (CPO). In the refinery, participants will see the conversion of CPO into refined cooking oils and other products.

Delegates will be taken on a 30 minutes drive to the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM). The institute was founded by British forestry scientists in 1929. At present, it a statutory body under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. With experience and knowledge gathered over nearly 10 decades coupled with extensive linkages with the many local and foreign institutions and organizations, FRIM is widely recognised as a premier institution in tropical forestry research and development, in Malaysia and internationally.
At FRIM, delegates can obtain information on the sustainable management and optimal use of forest resources, nature notes on Production Forest Management and Tree Growth Studies etc. There are also interesting forest trails for delegates to explore. At the same time delegates can learn some of Malaysia's most important timber trees or simply enjoy panoramic view of the forest.
